Mariposa Grove

Located at Yosemite’s southernmost end, the Mariposa Grove is the park’s largest stand of giant Sequoias, numbering about 500 trees. It is located approximately 1-½ hours from the Valley floor. A few of the Sequoias are visible from the parking area, but a trail extends uphill from the parking lot into the grove. There are interpretive signs along the way offering a self-guided tour.

Tuolumne Grove

This grouping of about 25 trees is near Crane Flat at the intersection of Big Oak and Tioga roads. The walk is 1 mile, with a 500 ft. drop in elevation, along the former route of Big Oak Flat Rd, which is now closed to cars. Make a note that the walk is moderately strenuous on the uphill return. Within the Grove there is an easy half-mile, self-guided nature trail.

Merced Grove

Yosemite’s quietest stand of Sequoias is the Merced Grove, a grouping of about 20 trees accessible only on foot. It is a four-mile roundtrip hike or ski (approx. 3 hours) into the grove from Big Oak Flat Road (Highway 120 West). Located 3 ½ miles north of Crane Flat and 4 ½ miles south of the Big Oak Flat Entrance, the trailhead is marked by a post labeled B-10 and a road sign.
